Our culture frequently emphasizes self-reliance, achievement, and the accumulation of wealth and status as markers of success and happiness. We are encouraged to project confidence, even if it's not rooted in genuine accomplishment. Humility is often seen as weakness, and dependence on others is discouraged. The pursuit of material wealth and social standing is often presented as the key to fulfillment. Therefore, the idea of embracing spiritual poverty, acknowledging our neediness before God, and finding joy in that dependence goes against the grain of much of contemporary cultural messaging.<br />
