Answer

**Wilhelm Wundt: The Father of Psychology**

**Years lived:** 1832-1920

**Major contributions attributed to him:**

Wundt is considered the "father of psychology" because he established the first psychology laboratory in Leipzig, Germany in 1879. This event is widely recognized as the formal beginning of psychology as a separate scientific discipline, distinct from philosophy and physiology. He separated the study of the mind from philosophy by emphasizing the use of experimental methods, such as introspection (carefully examining one's own thoughts and feelings), to study mental processes. He trained numerous students who went on to establish psychology programs in other countries, furthering the development of the field. He also founded the first academic journal for psychological research, *Philosophische Studien*.
